Warp & Woof...Proud to be named one of the Treasures of Nova Scotia

Treasures of Nova Scotia, published in 2009, highlights the top 200 places in the province to visit, stay, eat...and of course shop.

For eight months leading up to publication, thousands of locally-owned businesses were visited and graded by secret shoppers travelling across the province. Of the top 1,200 nominated selections, 200 businesses were finally selected and named Treasures of Nova Scotia.

When you visit, you'll know why Warp & Woof was named on of the Treasures of Nova Scotia. This beautiful book is available at the shop for $59.98.

History

The Warp & Woof Gifts and Gallery is Nova Scotia's oldest continuing gift shop and is located in a historic building located on Chester's famous Front Harbour looking out onto the islands dotting Mahone Bay. In 2011, the shop will be celebrating its 90th season!

The original name of the shop was "Warp and Woof Gifts and Thing-a-Bobs" and historical details are sketchy, sometimes changing according to who one talks to. For instance, some suggest the shop started as an ice cream shop in 1920 and others suggest it first appeared in 1921. At one point the store was located in the current site of Chester's flower shop, "Flowers, Flowers, Flowers" and then later moved to the current 81 Water Street address on the Front Harbour, which was a garage for the village electric utility and the Sweater Annex was added. Later the annex was sold off and the original shop was expanded by a large room at the front of the building and a stock room at the back.

Owner Gwen Dueck and her husband, John Shearson, purchased the store from Anne Flinn (Chester, Halifax) in 1995 and have made it their mission to offer unique and fascinating gift items from across Canada and around the globe.

Some very interesting details regarding ownership and history of the business can be found in the articles available for you to browse.
